A new measurement laboratory helps the better understanding of fifth generation (5G) mobile networks.
Within the framework of the Infocommunications and Information Technology National Laboratory (InfoLab) programme, a laboratory for measuring 5G networks was inaugurated on 9th May 2022 at the Óbuda University. The new measurement laboratory serves well the dual purpose of research and education, resulting in well-trained professionals with an up-to-date knowledge on the subject.
For the efficiency of the research on 5G mobile networks, it is essential to have an infrastructure that can adequately serve the tasks at hand. The laboratory, which is the result of the cooperation between the Special Service for National Security, the Óbuda University, Nokia and Vodafone, not only supports research activities but also makes a major contribution to the educational objectives of the university. In the future, students, young researchers and university lecturers will be able to gain insight into 5G technology, the construction and operation of a real infrastructure.
At the opening ceremony, dr. Hedvig Szabó, Director General of the Special Service for National Security, emphasized that
‘the InfoLab, which is the consortium of the Special Service for National Security and IdomSoft, pays special attention to the disruptive technologies of the future, or rather of the present and the future, including 5G. Our aim is to use them securely, and to this end we are launching research and innovations that can be used in everyday life and that also serve security. The Óbuda University provides the scientific and academic background for this, while we have partnered with industry players Nokia and Vodafone to develop the basic infrastructure. Industrial partnerships are important since they ensure future success.’
In his welcome speech dr. Ervin Rácz, the Vice Rector for Education of Óbuda University emphasised that they are constantly striving to improve the University infrastructurally to create a modern research environment and practice-oriented training opportunities that help them becoming a dominant technical university of Eastern Europe. It also was the purpose of the 4G/LTE Lab which has been established back in 2017, and the new 5G Lab will enhance this endeavour, drew the Vice Rector of the University.

‘This remarkably successful and futureproofing cooperation is still going strong for five years now, from year 2017. Our purpose was clear from the very beginning: thriving the practical knowledge of engineering students in order to help them entering the labour market right out of the university with marketable professional knowledge. It is a great pleasure for us that we reach a new milestone together, and from now on the engineering students, doctorates and academics of the Óbuda University are given the opportunity to do their researches in this highly equipped laboratory which operates with private 5G network provided by Vodafone.’
– said Dr. Anita Orbán, Corporate Relations Deputy CEO of Vodafone Hungary.
Zoltán Lázár, the Country Manager of Nokia Enterprise Hungary said that they participate as industrial partners in this project which was created within the framework of this cooperation and he emphasised that the security and safe functioning of networks play an important role not only in the field of science but also in the industrial life.
